Revolut has more than 30 million personal and more than 500,000 business users.

Revolut personal accounts can be opened by legal residents of the UK, the EEA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Switzerland, Japan, and the United States.

Revolut is a digital bank that offers a variety of benefits, including easy money management, travel perks, and investment opportunities.

Revolut offers five different personal plans to choose from. Each plan offers different benefits and features. They range from free to £45/mth.

What is Revolut?

Established in 2015 in London by Nikolay Storonsky and Vlad Yatensko, Revolut is one of the most popular neobanks, with over 35 million customers.

The fintech company offers access to a full range of payment and banking services to individuals and businesses. They have gained significant recognition in the UK and the EU for their user-friendly interface, seamless cross-border transactions within EU member states, and the ease of opening an account.

Revolut is also a favourite among frequent travellers thanks to the Revolut payment card that can be used in most countries and higher-tiered plans that offer traveller benefits like global medical insurance, luggage and trip insurance, and discounted accommodation and airport lounge access.

Unlike traditional banks, Revolut provides services exclusively online - via a mobile app. There are no physical branches customers can visit.

If you're considering using Revolut, this article will walk through the steps of opening a Revolut personal account in the UK.

Revolut operates in other countries - like the EU, the US, and Singapore - where features, terms, and conditions may differ. If you are interested in Revolut personal accounts in a specific country, please check Revolut’s website in that country for more information.

How to Open a Revolut Personal Account

Opening a Revolut personal account is simple and takes a matter of minutes. Anyone older than 18 can open a Revolut account if it’s available in their country. There are no special requirements.

The Revolut app is available in all major app stores. Here’s what the process looks like:

Step 1 - Download the Revolut app

You can easily download the Revolut app from either the Google Play Store or Apple Store. When searching for the app for personal use, look for the one with a white background. It's important not to confuse it with the Revolut Business app, which is solely for business purposes and doesn't allow for personal account setup.

Alternatively, you can visit the Revolut personal webpage and click on "Sign Up," which is located at the top right corner. Once you click, a popup will appear where you can scan a QR code to download the application or receive a text message with a link to download the application.

Step 2 - Enter Your Phone Number and a Six-digit Code

The next step is to enter your phone number, and you will be sent a 6-digit code via a text message to verify the Revolut account.

💡Tip: It is best to have a UK phone number, but Revolut App offers the option to open with other countries' phone numbers.

Step 3 - Enter Your Personal Information (Name, Birth date, Address, and Email address)

After you verify your number, you will be asked to choose your country of residence, enter your first and last name, and provide your birth date, address, and email.

You will also need to claim your @revtag, which is a unique code you can use to send and receive money with other Revolut users.

Step 4 - Top Up Your New Account (Optional)

Next, you'll have the option to top up your account. To do so, provide your bank account details for the initial deposit.

Your progress should be saved at this stage, allowing you to either proceed to the next step or resume the verification process when you're ready.

Step 5 - Verify Your Identity

To verify your identity, you'll need to take a live photo of a valid government-issued document and a live photo of your face.

In case you are resuming the process, open the Revolut app and go to your 'Profile' by tapping the profile icon at the top left. Then, select 'Account' and 'Personal details'. You'll be guided to verify your account.

First, take clear photos of both sides of the identity documents that match your Revolut profile details. Make sure all details on the document are readable for a smoother approval process. It's best to turn off the flash to avoid glare.

The photo must be taken live, as Revolut doesn't accept screenshots or copied and scanned images.

Likewise, take a real-time selfie, ensuring it's just you in the frame. Choose a well-lit area and make sure your entire face is visible. Revolut also doesn't accept existing selfies from galleries or scans.

Step 6 - Choose Your Plan

After your profile has been approved, you can select a plan and pay any applicable fees.

How to Apply for a Joint Account

  • Select 'Joint Account'.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
  • The other applicant will need to accept your invitation for the joint account.

How to Apply for a Revolut Pro Account

To create a Revolut Pro account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Home.
  2. Tap 'Account selector' below your balance.
  3. Tap '+Add new.'

There is no application fee for Revolut Pro.

How to Add a Revolut <18 Account

Revolut <18 is a sub-account to the Revolut personal account. Once you have a personal account, you can add either one or multiple Revolut >18 accounts, depending on your plan.

To create a new <18 account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to 'Home'.
  2. Tap the account selector below your balance.

Very easy to install and use

Very easy to install and use. It took me another 10-20 minutes to figure out how it works, but then it was a very simple and fast-forward app. I use it quite a lot occasionally. I would consider lower down the monthly payments, they are considerably high in proportion to many other apps, similar to this one.
