Suppliers show up because factories are there. Factories show up because suppliers are there. Skilled labour concentrates because both are there. Suzhou, Jiangsu became China's semiconductor and precision electronics hub by building the specialised cleanroom facilities and technical labour pool that chip and precision-component production needs, capabilities that took years to concentrate and aren't easily rebuilt elsewhere. Keqiao, in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, runs one of the world's largest textile and fabric trading markets because dyeing, weaving, and finishing capacity all sit within the same few districts, letting a buyer source fabric, get it finished, and move it to a garment factory without shipping it across the country in between.
In each case, the "why here" answer is the same: the cluster didn't get chosen for a product. It grew because early manufacturers of that product needed the same suppliers, tooling, and labour, and once enough of them were in one place, staying there became the rational choice for every new entrant.
The practical result for a buyer is this: a factory inside the right cluster isn't just cheaper because of local competition. It's faster to iterate with, has more component and material options a few minutes away, and can usually absorb small-batch or rush requests that a factory outside the cluster would have to quote at a premium, if it can take them at all.

How to Read a Manufacturing Map When You're Choosing Where to Source
Knowing the map is only useful if it changes what you actually do before placing an order. Three checks make the difference.
Check the supplier's actual address, not just their stated capability. A supplier's Alibaba profile can claim expertise in any category. Their registered business address, which you can usually find on their business licence or ask for directly, tells you whether they're operating inside the relevant cluster or outside it. A toy supplier registered in Chenghai has the local supply chain behind them. A toy supplier registered three provinces away is either a trading company reselling Chenghai-made product, or a factory working outside its natural ecosystem, and you want to know which before you order.
Ask what happens when they need something they don't make in-house. A cluster factory will usually name a specific neighbouring supplier or a turnaround time in days. A factory outside the cluster is more likely to describe a longer, vaguer sourcing chain, because it doesn't have the same density of options nearby.
Treat "we can make anything" as a flag to dig deeper, not a red flag on its own. The distinction that matters is whether they're transparent about which factory actually makes your product and where, versus presenting themselves as the manufacturer when they're not.

What Happens When You Source From the Wrong City
The cost of ignoring cluster geography usually doesn't show up as an outright scam. It shows up as slower iteration, thinner component options, and a supplier who quotes competitively on the base price but pads the timeline or struggles with a design change you'd expect to be routine.
A buyer sourcing eyewear from a factory outside Danyang, for example, may get a workable first sample, but a request to swap lens material or adjust a hinge design takes weeks instead of days, because the factory has to source that specific component from further away instead of walking it over from a supplier down the road. None of this is necessarily dishonest. It's the practical consequence of building outside the ecosystem that makes fast iteration possible in the first place.

A quote that looks identical to a cluster-based competitor's can turn out more expensive once you account for the extra freight the factory pays to bring in components, or the extra weeks a delayed sample costs you in missed selling season.
Paying Suppliers Across Multiple Clusters Without Losing Track
