Key Takeaways

Monzo Business is a UK business bank account offering free and instant UK bank transfers, available only to UK-based sole traders and limited companies. It comes in three plans, including a free option with no monthly fees.

Incoming foreign currency payments carry a 1% conversion fee (capped at £1,000). Outbound international transfers go through Wise and may require a separate Wise account.

Cash deposits are supported via Post Office and PayPoint, but monthly limits are low

Monzo is one of the most recognised names in UK consumer banking. Their business account extends that brand to small companies and sole traders — and it’s a popular product. On Google Play, Monzo holds a 4.5-star average from over 170,000 reviews. On Trustpilot, 4.6 from over 60,000.

The homepage is clean, with plans and pricing presented clearly. However, detailed information is spread across multiple pages, not just the service page. To better understand how everything works in practice, I explored Monzo’s product and sign-up process in depth.

This review shares the key findings to help you better understand Monzo. If you’re considering Monzo Business in 2026, here’s what you need to know before getting started.

What Monzo Business Advertises & What It Actually Is

Monzo Bank Ltd is a UK-licensed bank, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). It operates as a fully licensed bank, and business account deposits come with FSCS protection up to £120,000 under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) — the same level of protection offered by other UK banks participating in the scheme.

Monzo Business is a UK current account designed for sole traders and limited companies. It operates entirely through the Monzo mobile app, with no physical branches. If your business relies on face-to-face banking, this may not be the right fit.

Monzo positions its business account as a simple, easy-to-use, and low-cost online banking solution for small UK businesses. There are three plans available: Lite (free), Pro (£9/month), and Team (£25/month).

Choosing the right plan comes down to understanding the features, costs, and eligibility requirements. That’s where the four key learnings begin.

1. First Learning: Opening a Monzo Account

Monzo’s business account is built for UK-based users, and this is clearly reflected in its eligibility criteria:

  • You must be a UK-based sole trader or a UK-registered limited company registered with Companies House.
  • All directors and persons of significant control (PSCs) must be UK residents
  • You must be a UK tax resident, and not a tax resident in any other country
  • You must not be using a VPN when applying

The eligibility page also excludes several entity types, including partnerships, LLPs, companies limited by guarantee, charities, trusts, and clubs. Certain higher-risk industries are also restricted, although these are not publicly specified.

Tip: The residency check does not happen at the start of the application. It appears partway through — after you have entered your, trading duration, team size, and email address. If you are not eligible, you may spend several minutes completing steps before finding out.

Application Flow

You can sign up for a Monzo Business account via the website or mobile, but you’ll need to use the mobile app to complete verification. Because of this, it’s usually easier to just start on mobile.

After clicking “Open a business account,” the onboarding process begins with a series of basic questions:

  • The type of business you operate
  • How long you’ve been in business (with “less than 6 months” as the earliest option)
  • The size of your team

You are then asked to provide your email address. A sign-up link is sent to your email, and you must continue the process in the same browser—otherwise, an error may occur.

Next, you’ll be asked where your business is registered.

If your country of residence is outside the UK, the application does not proceed.

  • If your country is not supported at all, you’ll see a message stating that Monzo does not offer services there
  • If your country is potentially supported in the future (e.g., some EEA countries), you’ll be shown a “Register your interest” page, where you can leave your email and business type

If you’re a UK resident with a UK-registered business, you can proceed by entering your exact address. The system will automatically verify it—if your address cannot be confirmed, the application may stop at this stage. Otherwise, you continue further in the onboarding process.

You don’t need Monzo’s personal account to apply for a business account. However, if you already have one, the process can be quicker since some of your information is already on file.

2. Second Learning: The Three-Tier Plan Structure

All plans include free instant UK bank transfers, access to loans, and the ability to accept payments, such as contactless payments and card payments. For international transactions, Monzo integrates with Wise, allowing you to send and receive money cross-border, with Wise setup and fees applied.

The Lite plan covers basic banking but does not include accounting integrations. Pro adds essential tools like accounting integrations and invoicing, but is limited to small teams. The Team plan is designed for businesses with staff, offering shared access and controls.

Feature Lite (Free) Pro (£9/mo) Team (£25/mo)
UK bank transfers Free Free Free
Mastercard® debit card Yes Yes Yes
Monzo Pots Yes Yes Yes
24/7 customer support via in-app chat Yes Yes Yes
loans and overdrafts (if eligible) Yes Yes Yes
Invoicing tools No Yes Yes
Accounting Integration No Yes Yes
Virtual cards No Yes Yes
Expense cards
Individual expense cards linked to the main account.
No No Yes
Bulk payments No No Yes
Multi-user access No Limited Up to 15 for a company

 A few things worth noting

The  Lite (Free) plan excludes team access and accounting integrations entirely

If you use Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, or Sage to manage your books, the Lite plan won’t connect to them. That upgrade costs £9/month.

The free plan covers UK banking essentials: a current account number, Mastercard® debit card, free UK bank transfers, and Monzo Savings Pots for setting money aside.

What Lite does not include: invoicing, accounting integrations, bulk payments, team access, or advanced features like virtual and expense cards. If you need to connect your bank to accounting software for better bookkeeping or give others access to manage finances, the Monzo Lite free plan won’t be enough.

Pro plan: for a more established business, but for small teams

The Monzo Pro account includes the tools most growing small businesses need: accounting integrations, invoicing, Tax Pots, virtual cards, and a limited team access level. This is where Monzo starts to feel like a more complete business account, rather than just a basic current account.

Pro still doesn’t support larger teams, bulk payments, or advanced team controls. These features are only available on higher plans, making Pro less suitable for more complex business setups.

Pro was priced at £5/month for several years, but it has now increased to £9/month for new customers. If you’ve seen older comparisons quoting £5, that price is now outdated.

Team plan: for larger teams and shared access

The Team plan builds on Pro by adding multi-user access for up to 15 people, along with individual permission levels. You also get bulk payments.

If you need to give access to a bookkeeper, accountant, or operations manager, this is the only plan that supports it properly.

3. Third Learning: International Payment Restrictions

Monzo Business accounts operate in GBP and, while they offer some international features, they are primarily designed for UK-based business use. This has direct implications for businesses that regularly send or receive payments internationally.

Transaction type How Monzo handles it Cost
UK bank transfers Processed directly by Monzo Free
Incoming foreign currency payment Converted to GBP on arrival 1% conversion fee, capped at £1,000 per transaction.
Outbound international transfer Via Wise integration (third party) Wise fees from 0.33%

The 1% incoming conversion can be significant. On a EUR 10,000 payment, that’s roughly £85–90 before you’ve done anything.

Outbound international transfers run through Wise, which has its own fee structure. It works — but you also need to sign up with Wise.

For a UK-focused business with occasional foreign invoices, this is manageable. For a business with regular cross-border payments, it adds meaningful friction and cost.

4. Fourth Learning: Spending Limits Can Be Restrictive

Monzo Business accounts include preset limits for daily card spending, cash withdrawals (both in the UK and internationally), and bank transfers. You can view these limits directly in your account by going to the Home tab, tapping the three dots below your card, then selecting “Manage account” and scrolling down to the Limits section.

Limit Type Sole Trader Limited Company
Daily bank transfer £25,000 £50,000
30-day rolling transfers £75,000 £200,000
Card payments (daily) £10,000 £10,000

You can request higher limits in-app, but approval is not guaranteed. For businesses handling larger or frequent transactions, these limits can become a constraint.

5. Fifth Learning: Not Ideal for Cash-Heavy Businesses

If you handle cash, Monzo Business does support deposits — but there are limitations on where you can deposit and how much you can pay in, both per transaction and as a monthly allowance. If cash is a core part of your business, you may want to consider alternative options.

You can pay cash into your Monzo Business account at any UK Post Office or PayPoint location. Here are Monzo's cash deposit fees and limits.

Cash deposit Details
Fee £1 per deposit transaction
Per Deposit Limit Up to £300 per deposit at PayPoint Sole traders: up to £3,000 per deposit Limited companies: up to £4,000 per deposit
Monthly Deposit Limit Sole traders: £3,000 Limited companies: £10,000
Processing Time PayPoint: up to 10 minutes to appear in your account Post Office: immediately available

Monzo also lets you pay in cheques under £500 in-app by taking a photo, which is a handy touch for businesses that occasionally receive them.

Who Monzo Is, and Is Not, For

Monzo’s surface-level pitch is an easy-to-use, low-cost UK business account. That description is accurate within its constraints.

Monzo works well if

You’re a UK-based sole trader or small limited company handling GBP transactions primarily. The free Lite plan covers the daily basics. The app experience is clean and consistently rated highly. If accounting integrations matter, £9/month for Pro is a reasonable upgrade.

Monzo doesn’t work if

  • You’re based outside the UK — the application will not proceed past the residency screen
  • Your business type falls outside of sole trader or limited company
  • You regularly receive or send foreign currency payments
  • You need to hold balances in more than one currency
  • Your business processes high transaction volumes or large transfers that exceed £25,000–£50,000 daily or £75,000–£200,000 over a 30-day period
  • Cash deposits are a regular part of your business — the monthly limits are restrictive

A Final Note

Monzo Business is a well-built product for the audience it serves. If you are a UK sole trader or small limited company dealing primarily in GBP, it does the job cleanly — and the mobile banking app experience is genuinely good. The pricing is clear, the plans are well-structured, and the fee-free business current account tier is real, not a stripped-down trial.

The limits only become problems when your situation sits outside the design. Non-UK residency, multi-currency operations, regular cash handling, or team sizes above 15 — any of these and Monzo might not be the right fit. Knowing that before you apply saves time.

For businesses that fit the profile, it is worth a serious look. For those that don't, you may want to look at other challenger banks or other providers.

FAQs

Is Monzo good for business banking?

Monzo works well for UK sole traders and small limited companies that manage most of their finances in GBP. The app is easy to use, onboarding is fast, and everyday payments are simple to track. It is a strong option for domestic banking, but less suitable for businesses that need multi-currency support or regular international transfers.
