Opening a Monzo business account takes around 10 minutes if you have everything ready. But the sign-up process has one early screen that ends things for a significant share of applicants — before any documents are requested, before any plan is chosen. Knowing what to expect before you start saves time.

Research disclosure: All screen observations come from reviewing the Monzo sign-up pages and Monzo’s published eligibility page. Monzo’s process may change after publication.

What Does Monzo Business Actually Offer?

Before walking through the sign-up steps, it helps to know what you're signing up for — and whether Monzo suits your situation.

Monzo is a fully regulated UK bank, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). That means your eligible deposits are protected by FSCS protection up to £120,000 — the same level of protection you’d get with a traditional high street bank.

Three plans for small businesses

Monzo Business comes in three tiers:

  1. The Lite plan is free — no monthly fee. It covers the basics: free UK bank transfers, payment links, a debit card, savings pots, and 24/7 in-app customer support. You can also accept card payments and apply for a loan if eligible.
  2. The business Pro plan adds tools aimed at more organised finances: accounting integrations with popular accounting software like FreeAgent, QuickBooks, and Xero for smoother bookkeeping, a tax pot built around making tax digital, and some multi-user access for a small number of team members.
  3. The Team plan is built for business owners managing up to 15 team members. It unlocks better spending control, higher-level multi-user access and expense cards.

Where Monzo has limits

Who it's best for

Monzo Business is a strong fit for UK-based sole traders and small limited companies that want a reliable, mobile-first bank. It's less suited to businesses that need heavy international banking, cash handling, or more sophisticated team finance tools.

1. Who Can Open a Monzo Business Account

Check this first — because Monzo doesn’t screen everything upfront. You can go through several steps before finding out you’re not eligible.

Here are Monzo Business account eligibility criteria

  • UK-based sole trader or UK-registered limited company
  • All directors and PSCs must be UK residents
  • Must be a UK tax resident only, not a tax resident in any other country
  • At least 16 years old
  • Business income must mainly come from selling goods or services, not from interest or investments
  • If a company must be active on Companies House, not dormant

Some entity types are also excluded (e.g. partnerships, LLPs, charities, trusts, clubs), along with certain higher-risk industries.

📌 Unsupported Business Types

📌 Examples of Restricted or Unsupported Industries

If you don’t meet these, you’ll only be screened out later in the process — after you’ve already spent time applying.

During this step, unsupported countries will see a message that Monzo isn’t available there. For countries that may be supported later (e.g. parts of Europe), you’ll see a “Register your interest” page to leave your email and business type.

Pro tip: You can open up to three Monzo business accounts, but each one must be for a separate business, and each business must meet the eligibility criteria.

2. What You’ll Need to Have Ready

Monzo’s document requirements are relatively light compared to traditional banks. What you need depends on your business type:

Business type What to prepare
Sole trader Government-issued photo ID, proof of address (e.g. utility bill, signed lease, or HMRC letter); your tax reference number
Limited company Government-issued photo ID for all persons of significant control; Companies House registration number; details of all directors and PSCs; proof of address; ensure Companies House information is up to date

Already have a Monzo current account? Apply in-app by tapping your profile (top left), scrolling to “Do more with Monzo,” and selecting “Apply for a Business account.” Use the same email and phone number linked to your account.

3. Friction Points to Watch For

Monzo's sign-up is mostly smooth, but two things catch people off-guard.

The magic link only works in the same browser
During sign-up, you’ll answer a few questions before being asked to enter your email address. This step can already feel a bit like friction, but the bigger issue comes next: Monzo sends you a “magic link” via email to continue the process. That link is tied to the browser session where you started your application. It won’t work if you open it in a different browser, on another device, or in an incognito window.

If your UK address does not appear in the lookup, you cannot continue.

You’ll be asked to enter your postcode and select your address from a list. However, if your address doesn’t appear, you won’t be able to complete sign-up.

Before starting your application, check that your address is listed on Royal Mail’s postcode finder. If it isn’t, you may run into issues at this step, so it’s best to contact Monzo support or email help@monzo.com to find out how to proceed.

4. Steps to Open a Monzo Business Account

Opening a Monzo Business account is quick and fully online. You can start the application either on the website or directly in the Monzo app. The onboarding takes place in the mobile app, where you complete identity checks, verification, and account setup. So it’s generally easier to just start on mobile.

Step 1: Start Your Application

Download the app or go to monzo.com/business-banking and click “Open a business account.”

You’ll be asked a few basic questions:

  • What type of business you run (e.g. services, ecommerce, online)
  • How long you’ve been operating
  • How many people are in your team

Step 2: Enter Your Email

  • Enter your email address
  • Monzo will send you a secure magic link
  • Open the link in the same browser you started with

👉 Important: Use the same email and phone number if you plan to open other Monzo accounts in the future.

Step 4: Confirm Your Location,

  • Select your location ( must be the UK to continue)
  • You’ll then enter your UK postcode, and Monzo will automatically show a list of addresses for you to select from.

Step 5: Fill in Bussiness Information

You'll then answer a more detailed set of questions about your business, such as the industry you work in, what your business actually does, which countries you trade with, and your expected turnover.

You may be asked to upload supporting documents such as a utility bill or HMRC letter as proof of business address. Limited companies will also need to provide their registered company number, and if there are any persons of significant control (PSCs), Monzo may need to verify their identities too.

Step 6: Verify Your Identity

Once all this information is submitted, you'll be shown a QR code to download the Monzo app if you haven't already. From there, identity verification, plan selection, and card activation all happen inside the app.You may be asked to scan a valid photo ID or record a short selfie video

5. How Long Does It Take?

For most straightforward applications, Monzo’s approval is within a few hours. In some cases, it can take a few days.

Applications may take longer if additional review is required, for example if identity verification needs a manual check or if the business type or industry triggers extra screening.

Sole trader applications are typically faster than limited company applications, as there are fewer people to verify. If all directors and PSCs are UK residents with valid UK photo ID, the process is usually more straightforward.

If your application is declined
Monzo does not always provide a specific reason for declining an application. Reapplying won’t necessarily lead to a different outcome.

In some cases, you may be able to apply again in the future. If that option is available, Monzo will let you know.

6. Monzo Alternatives

If Monzo is not an option — because you’re based outside the UK, have foreign directors, or run a business type they don’t support — here are some alternatives depending on your situation.

Situation Alternative to consider
UK business, non-UK resident directors Revolut Business (supported EEA and some other countries of residence)
Limited liability partnership (LLP) Starling Bank accepts LLPs — but requires all directors and persons of significant control to be UK residents
Need multi-currency + international transfers Revolut Business, or Statrys (for Business registered in the BVI, Hong Kong or Singapore)
