20+ years in Asia as a corporate lawyer, investor, and fintech founder. I've sat on both sides of the table and seen the same avoidable mistakes hit founders again and again. The reviews and articles I write are for founders who'd rather skip the mistakes.

Last reviewed April 2026.

Key takeaways

Zempler Bank is a fully licensed UK bank with FSCS protection up to £120,000

For a UK-only business that wants a no-fuss account, it is a solid option.

International payment capability is limited. Outbound transfers go to USD accounts in the US and EUR accounts in the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) region only.

If your business pays suppliers in Asia or moves money outside USD/EUR regularly, Zempler will create friction. For that use case, a multi-currency account is a more practical fit.

If you run a UK-registered business and are weighing your account options, Zempler Bank is one of the easiest to open. No branch visit. Most accounts are ready to receive payments the same day. For a UK sole trader or small business that needs a straightforward, FSCS-protected account without the friction of a high-street bank application, it gets the job done.

The question is what happens when your business starts moving money internationally. Zempler’s international payment capability is real but narrow: you can send USD to US bank accounts and EUR within the SEPA region, both via the Wise Platform. Inbound international transfer costs up to £22. If that friction fits your business, Zempler is a reasonable choice. If it does not, this review will help you find something that does.

This review covers all three Zempler account tiers and which suits which business, the fees that are most likely to affect your monthly costs, the limits of Zempler's international payment capability, and a verdict on who this account is and isn't right for.

Disclosure: This review is published by Statrys, a payment platform for businesses registered in Hong Kong, Singapore, and the BVI operating internationally. Statrys and Zempler Bank serve different primary markets and are not direct competitors in most use cases. Where this review notes Zempler's limitations on international payments, we suggest Statrys as one possible alternative (if you are eligible). All fee data has been sourced directly from Zempler's official pricing pages.

A Quick Look: Is Zempler Bank right for your business?

In short, Zempler Bank is a strong choice for UK-only businesses. If you move money internationally with any regularity, it is not.

Good fit

✅ UK-only businesses with low to moderate transaction volumes

✅ Sole traders and freelancers who want FSCS protection

✅ Startups and new businesses looking to build a credit history

✅ Businesses rejected or delayed by high-street bank applications

✅ Businesses that do occasional EUR or USD transfers within Zempler’s supported corridors

Not a good fit

❌ Businesses that pay suppliers in Asia, the Middle East, or outside USD/EUR

❌ Businesses that need to hold multiple foreign currencies

❌ Businesses that receive international payments regularly

❌ Businesses making 500+ transactions per month, especially since some UK providers offer free local transfers, with some having limits while others offer higher or unlimited volumes.

❌ Businesses that need to deposit cheques

Zempler Bank Account Tiers At A Glance

Zempler offers three business account tiers. The differences come down to transaction limits, monthly fees, and access to specific tools.

Business Go Business Extra Business Pro
Best for Sole traders and startups with low transaction volume Businesses that travel, spend abroad, or want to build business credit Higher-volume businesses that need payment headroom and dedicated support
Monthly fee £0 £9 £19
Free UK payments 3/month then 35p each 20/month then 35p each 500/month then 35p each
Cashback Up to 0.5% on card spend Up to 1% on card spend
Interest-earning savings pots ✔️
Credit-builder tool ✔️
In-app messaging support ✔️ ✔️
Dedicated phone account management ✔️
Maximum daily ATM withdrawal £500 £500 Unlimited
Single outbound bank transfer £25,000 £100,000 £100,000

All three tiers include FSCS protection, integrated accounting, digital invoice creation, digital receipt capture, cashflow tracking, savings pots, and Making Tax Digital integration.

Three things worth flagging before choosing a tier. The Creditbuilder tool is exclusive to Business Extra — it is not available on Go or Pro. Business Pro is the only tier with a dedicated telephone account manager. And if your business regularly spends in foreign currencies, Extra and Pro waive the non-sterling transaction fee entirely while Go charges it on every transaction.

No cheque deposits are accepted on any tier.

Zempler Business Account’s Features

Now that you’ve seen the pricing tiers, let’s look at some of the key features in more detail.

  • Set Aside Pots: Available across all plans, Pots let you create sub-accounts to set money aside for specific purposes.
  • Spending Insights: The dashboard includes built-in spending insights, giving you a clear overview of where your money is going so you can track and manage business expenses more effectively.
  • Business Cards & Currency Cards: Once your Zempler business card is activated, you can order additional Euro and USD currency cards.
  • Accounting software Integrations: All three tiers integrate with Xero, QuickBooks, and Sage. Transactions sync automatically, reducing manual bookkeeping and helping to simplify year-end reconciliation.
  • CreditBuilder (Business Extra plan – £9/month): CreditBuilder reports your monthly account fee payments to UK credit reference agencies over a 12-month period. If all payments are made on time, it can help build a positive credit history for your business. This feature is most useful for new businesses, those with limited credit history, or businesses looking to rebuild credit. It offers little additional value to companies that already have a strong credit profile.
  • Cash Deposits: You can deposit cash at any of the UK’s 11,500 Post Office locations.

International Payments: The Critical Limitation

This is the section that most reviews cover in a paragraph and move on. It deserves more space because it determines whether Zempler is a viable primary account for your business.

↑ Sending international payments

What you can send

  • Sending USD: You can only send US dollars to the United States. There is no USD route to any other country.
  • Sending EUR: You can send euros to 30 countries, mostly in Europe, including Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Poland. The full list is on Zempler's website. Sending outside that list is not possible.

Limitations

  • You cannot set up scheduled or recurring international payments. Every international transfer requires you to initiate it manually and accept a new exchange rate quote.
  • Processed through Wise: Zempler's international payments run through Wise, which means the recipient may see "Wise" in the sender name.
  • Timing: Delivery times vary by country and currency. Allow at least two working days before querying a transaction receipt.

Cost

Sending fees are shown in the app at the time of transfer.

↓ Receiving international payments

What you can receive

Limitations

  • Any payment sent from a country not included on the specified list of supported countries will be returned to the sender.
  • Its IBANs are not presently reachable within SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area). This means European clients must specifically request a SWIFT transfer rather than using their bank's standard transfer option, which not all banks offer by default and which may add fees on their side.
  • All international payments sent to your account will be converted into GBP.

Cost

  • Receiving a non-GBP currency: £5 flat fee + 1% of
  • Receiving GBP: £5 flat fee

For instance, if you receive a payment in euros equal to £2,500, the total fee would be £30, made up of a £5 fixed fee plus £25 (1% of £2,500). However, if the same payment is received in GBP, you would only pay the £5 fixed fee since no currency conversion is required.

How to Open a Zempler Bank Business Account

The application is completed entirely online and takes around 10 minutes.

1. Choose your account tier. Go to zemplerbank.com and select the business account tier that suits your needs.

2. Enter your details. You'll need to provide your personal details, business information, and registered address. How this works depends on your business type:

  • Limited Companies — Zempler pulls your information directly from Companies House.
  • Charities, Partnerships, LLPs, and Public Sector organisations — you'll be asked to enter your information manually.
  • Sole Traders — you only need to provide your home address.

Zempler will attempt to verify your personal and business details automatically. If anything needs following up, they'll contact you by email.

3. Verify your identity. Zempler uses an online identity verification process — no in-person visit is required.

4. Activate your account. Once approved, your new business debit card will arrive within 3–5 working days. Activate your card, set your PIN, and your account is ready to use.

According to Zempler, once approved, customers receive an account number and can start paying in immediately:

  • 99.97% of customers get access the same day
  • On average, access is granted in 0 days
  • 99% of customers are set up within 0 days

(These figures are taken directly from Zempler's website.)

What Customers Are Saying

Zempler has a strong overall rating on both major review platforms. On Trustpilot, it holds a score of 4.5 out of 5 based on more than 16,000 reviews. Similarly, on Smart Money People, it achieves an even higher rating of 4.83 out of 5 from over 9,000 reviewers.

Positive feedback commonly highlights the app’s ease of use, as well as good service from the customer support team in many cases. However, some report issues such as frozen accounts, inconsistent customer service, and occasional payment delays.

Account freezes during compliance reviews are not unique to Zempler, but the complaints suggest communication during those periods could be clearer.

Zempler Bank Alternatives

The right alternative depends on what Zempler cannot do for your specific situation.

For UK-only businesses that need more transactions

Starling Bank is a fully licensed UK bank offering a free business bank account with no monthly fees and no charges on UK transfers or ATM withdrawals. For businesses making a high volume of domestic payments, this is a meaningful advantage over Zempler's free plan, which only includes 3 free transfers per month before per-transaction fees kick in.

Monzo Business is another business current account worth considering if you want free UK transfers and primarily use online banking through a mobile app. It includes standard UK features—like Faster Payments—in its base plan, with no per-transaction fees.
