What Is Airwallex?

Airwallex is a multinational fintech company founded in 2015 in Melbourne, Australia, backed by Tencent, a major Chinese multinational corporation. It has received over USD 900 million in funding from 25 investors across 12 rounds. [1]

Airwallex is not a bank, but it is licensed and regulated to provide electronic money and financial services in multiple regions, including Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong,  Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US. [2]

The company’s key offerings include a multi-currency wallet, which operates similarly to virtual business accounts, as well as local and international transfer services and business cards. Airwallex supports businesses in over 50 countries, though available features and products may vary depending on the business’s registered location.

In 2025, Airwallex is launching new features such as bulk transfer approvals on mobile, instant transfers via Airwallex Pay, and manual fund capture for Shopline transactions. [3]

Is Airwallex Right for Your Business?

Pros of Airwallex

Airwallex Might Be a Good Fit if You:

  • Prefer a digital banking experience: Open your account online and manage your finances 24/7 within their platform.
  • Operate globally: Benefit from local accounts in 13 major markets, receiving payments like a local.
  • Value competitive fees: Compared to traditional banks, Airwallex offers competitive fees and rates.
  • Want Integrated Solutions: You value advanced features like APIs, payment links, and software integrations for efficiency.

Cons of Airwallex

Airwallex Might Not Be a Good Fit if You:

  • Have a high volume of incoming transfers: Airwallex charges a 0.3% fee on non-owner incoming transfers, which could accumulate.
  • Need in-person or extensive support: Airwallex operates solely online with no physical branches. Their customer support details are also relatively limited.
  • Find Complexity Overwhelming: Managing multiple accounts and wallets, and understanding the many different fees for each service might be too intricate.
  • Need ATM Access: ATM withdrawal is not supported.

Airwallex Features

Airwallex offers extensive products and services tailored for businesses to streamline cross-border payments and multi-currency transactions on an all-in-one platform.

Business Account

With an Airwallex business account, you can open local currency accounts in over 60 countries, accept payments from more than 180 countries, and make transfers to over 150 countries.

Airwallex’s business account combines Global Accounts and multi-currency wallets. Businesses can receive payments in different foreign currencies via local Global Accounts and store and transfer those funds using multi-currency wallets. Here’s how they work together:

Global Accounts

Global accounts allow you to collect money in over 20 currencies using local currency accounts. When you open a Global Account in a specific country, you get local bank and branch codes, as well as dedicated account numbers for that country, as if you had a local bank account there. This setup enables you to collect payments in the currency of that country and any other currencies supported by the Global Account you choose to open. [4]

You can open multiple Global Accounts. They are available in the following locations:

  • Australia: Collect funds in AUD.
  • Canada: Collect funds in CAD.
  • Denmark: Collect funds in DKK, CZK, CHF, GBP, HUF, MXN, NOK, PLN, RON, SEK, ZAR.
  • The EU (SEPA area): Collect funds in EUR.
  • Hong Kong: Collect funds in HKD, CNY, EUR, USD, AUD, CAD, CHF, GBP, JPY, NZD, SGD.
  • Indonesia: Collect funds in IDR. (In most cases, IDR deposits will be converted into USD.)
  • Mexico: Collect funds in MXN
  • New Zealand: Collect funds in NZD.
  • Poland: Collect funds in PLN.
  • Singapore: Collect funds in SGD, USD, NZD, SEK, NOK, AUD, CHF, HKD, JPY, EUR, GBP, CAD, CNY
  • The UK: Collect funds in GBP.
  • The US: Collect funds in USD.
  • The United Arab Emirates: Collect funds in AED.

With these accounts, you can receive payments from PayPal and popular ecommerce platforms like Amazon and Shopify, as well as through supported local and international payment networks. For instance, a USD account in the US supports ACH, Fedwire and SWIFT, while a GBP account in the UK supports BACS and CHAPS, and a EUR account supports SEPA transactions. The available payment methods depend on the region and are determined by Airwallex. [5]

Note that the Global Account itself does not hold any funds. It is solely for receiving deposits. [6] All funds are stored in your wallet, which receives deposits from your Global Accounts. We’ll discuss this wallet in the next section.

Multi-Currency Wallets

Once you create Global Accounts, you can view all of them in your wallet. Your wallet receives deposits from your Global Accounts and holds those funds.

From your wallet, you can initiate fund transfers through SWIFT payments or local payouts to over 150 countries in over 60 currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, HKD, AUD, CAD, SGD, JPY, KRW, INR, and THB. You can check Airwallex’s Payout Guide to see which payment networks are available for your beneficiaries based on their location. [7]

Airwallex accounts also allow you to make batch payments to facilitate payments to up to 1,000 recipients at once or schedule transfers for either one-time or recurring payments.

Corporate Cards

Airwallex provides multi-currency Visa corporate cards, also known as borderless cards, in some regions. Here’s what you can do with them:

  • Issue two types of cards—virtual company cards for team and business expenses like software subscriptions and ad spending, and employee cards for individual employee purchases such as travel expense.
  • Employee cards are available as physical and virtual cards, plus compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay.
  • Cards are linked to the balances and currencies in your business account
  • Pay anywhere Visa is accepted, both online and in-store
  • 0% foreign transaction fees.
  • Track, review, and approve company expenses from a single platform with built-in expense management.
  • Direct Billing in USD, AUD, CAD, SGD, NZD, HKD, JPY, EUR, GBP, CHF.

If you lack the required currency balance, funds will automatically be converted from your home currency at Airwallex’s FX rates. Note that some limitations apply, including no ATM withdrawals and limited availability in certain regions.

Other Services

Airwallex also offers other financial solutions, including

  • FX Service: Converts your money into 60 currencies with a competitive foreign exchange rate. Airwallex determines its rate based on various factors, including market liquidity, prices from liquidity providers, market conditions, and sales margins.
  • Software Integrations: Connect with accounting software such as HubSpot, Xero, and Quickbooks to save time using automatic reconciliation.

They also offer platform APIs for users looking to automate financial operations and payment solutions like payment gateways, plugins and checkout.

Note: During weekends or when the foreign exchange (FX) markets are closed, Airwallex might add a markup to the base exchange rate.

Airwallex’s Feature Rating is 8.5/10

Airwallex provides comprehensive features designed to meet the needs of businesses operating globally. Its services cover essential cross-border payment solutions, including virtual local accounts, currency management, expense control, and financial automation. The vast payment network is also beneficial for businesses to reach the global scale easily.

However, there are a few drawbacks. Managing separate accounts for different currencies, along with regional differences and the division between accounts for receiving payments and wallets for handling funds, may be complex or confusing for some, especially when compared to a single multi-currency account. Additionally, physical cards are only available in selected regions, and the lack of ATM access is inconvenient for users needing cash.

Airwallex’s Fees Rating is 7.5/10

Airwallex offers a competitive fee structure with several free services, including monthly fees and local transfers. However, the relatively high receiving fee and the variability in FX conversion rates may affect businesses with high volumes of international transactions. Also, the fees may vary depending on where your business is registered.

Lastly, while their additional fees are outlined in the full fee schedule, adding to transparency, the complexity and many different details may make it hard to understand for some.

Eligibility Requirements for Opening an Airwallex Account

Airwallex offers Business Accounts strictly for business transactions where goods or services are sold.  If your business is registered in one of the countries supported by Airwallex and operates in non-prohibited industries, you can open a business account with Airwallex.

Examples of prohibited sectors include arms dealing, gambling, pharmaceuticals, charities, and investment firms. Currently, Airwallex also cannot onboard businesses with Ultimate Beneficial Owners (UBOs) or directors residing in Russia or Belarus. [14]

Your business's registration country determines which Airwallex entity manages your account. For example, businesses in Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and Puerto Rico are registered with Airwallex Hong Kong and follow its terms, pricing, and product access.

Opening an Airwallex account can be done remotely, with the review process typically taking 3 business days. The onboarding team may request additional documents if needed. Once your Airwallex account is active, you can apply for each Global Account that you need, and they will be added to your wallet.

The Ease of Opening an Account Rating for Airwallex is 9/10

Airwallex’s Global Account opening process stands out for its digital option and accessibility across multiple locations worldwide. These features make the application straightforward and streamline the onboarding process for eligible businesses. Moreover, the average account approval time of 3 days is considered fast compared to traditional banks.

However, one drawback is that it does not support individual accounts.

User Reviews & Ratings

Airwallex holds a Trustpilot rating of 3.7/5, with mixed reviews. Customers praise the easy account setup, wide range of services, and competitive rates. However, common complaints include slow response times and difficulties in reaching customer support, along with unexpected fees and account freezing. [15]

Airwallex Alternative: Statrys

Statrys is a solid alternative to Airwallex for business accounts in Hong Kong and Singapore.

What differentiates Statrys from Airwallex is its focus on personalised support and simplicity. While both platforms handle multiple currencies and aim to simplify cross-border transactions, Airwallex offers local currency accounts solely for fund collection and a separate wallet for sending funds. In contrast, Statrys provides a multi-currency account that lets you hold and manage 11 major currencies—including HKD, SGD, RMB, USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, NZD, JPY, and CHF—under a single account number.

Additionally, Statrys provides competitive FX services and personalised support to all account holders through multiple channels, such as phone, email, and live chat.

Although Airwallex supports more currencies, Statrys is a good choice if you prefer a simpler, more personalised service and if the 11 major currencies it offers meet your needs.
