Key Takeaways
The 0.3% inbound fee is the one thing to check before signing up. It's not on the public pricing page — we found it in the account dashboard — and at HKD 200,000/month received from clients, it's roughly HKD 600/month before any FX or transfer costs.
Net-net: Airwallex is the stronger choice for businesses paying out internationally (suppliers, contractors, payroll) than for those collecting payments from clients, where the inbound fee and lack of a dedicated account manager work against it.
How I Conducted This Research
Statrys competes directly with Airwallex in Hong Kong and Singapore, so I'll say upfront: I keep a funded Airwallex account myself, the same way I keep accounts with most of Statrys' direct competitors. I've funded it, spent on the card, paid real suppliers, and gone looking for what changed when Airwallex rolled out new features in 2026.
Disclosure: Statrys operates in the Hong Kong financial services market. We have made every effort to present an accurate, evidence-based review. All information is sourced directly from Airwallex’s official website and is accurate as of July 2026. User review data is drawn from Trustpilot and G2. What Airwallex Advertises
Airwallex's pricing page looks competitive: a free Explore plan, no local transfer fees, FX "from 0.2%" above interbank, and — on paper — a dedicated account manager once you upgrade far enough. Airwallex is regulated by Hong Kong's Customs & Excise Department as a Money Service Operator (MSO Licence No. 16-09-01929); it states explicitly it is not a bank and its Hong Kong wallet is not a stored value facility, so deposits aren't covered by the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board.
The number that actually determines whether Airwallex is cheaper or more expensive for your business is not on that pricing page. This review covers what Airwallex actually costs to use in Hong Kong, based on real account activity, not just the advertised rate card.
Who Airwallex Is Ideal For ✅
- Businesses with regular cross-border payments. The FX rate from 0.2% above interbank is competitive, and being able to hold multiple currencies in one account cuts conversion costs for companies paying suppliers across Asia or Europe.
- Companies scaling internationally. The Grow (HKD 499/month) and Accelerate (from HKD 2,499/month) plans add multi-user access, approval workflows, and expense management that growing teams need.
- Startups with distributed teams. Virtual and physical Visa cards per employee, linked to the account balance, work well for teams managing expenses across time zones.
Who Airwallex Is Not Ideal For 🚫
- Small or local operations. If you primarily make local HKD transfers and rarely deal in foreign currency, the Explore plan’s real value is limited.
- Teams with many staff cardholders. Beyond the 5 included cards, you pay HKD 40 per cardholder per month. A team of 20 employees with cards adds HKD 600/month before any other fees.
- Businesses collecting frequent inbound payments from clients. Airwallex may charge a 0.3% inbound receiving fee to every transfer from a non-owner account. If your business model involves receiving regular payments from clients, this fee can cost more than the monthly plan saves you. As this fee is not listed on the main pricing page and may be account-dependent, it's a good idea to check whether it applies to your use case.
Pros
1. Competitive FX from 0.2% above interbank makes cross-border payments cheaper
Airwallex uses interbank FX rates — the rate banks use between themselves — and adds a margin starting from 0.2%. For businesses making regular international payments to suppliers, contractors, or employees across Asia and Europe, this is a meaningful cost advantage over traditional banks that typically apply opaque markups of 1.5–3%, often without separately disclosing the spread.
For a business converting HKD 500,000 per month to USD or EUR, a 1% difference in FX rate costs HKD 5,000/month. At 0.2% Airwallex markup versus 1.5% at a traditional bank, the saving compounds quickly at scale.
2. Global Accounts with local receiving details remove international collection friction
Airwallex’s Global Account structure lets you open accounts with local account details in major markets — a US routing number, a UK sort code, an Australian BSB — so clients in those markets can pay you like a domestic transfer, rather than initiating an international wire, which is faster and cheaper for both sides. In our testing, Global Accounts for USD, EUR, and GBP were created within a minute each.
3. Visa corporate debit cards are included on all plans
Airwallex issues Visa debit cards — both physical and virtual — linked directly to your account balance. Company cards cover operational expenses; employee cards are for individual spend such as travel and software subscriptions. All plans include company cards and the first 5 employee cards at no cost.
Cards operate in the currency of your account balance, with automatic FX conversion at Airwallex’s rate if you spend in a currency you don’t hold. For teams that need a card-based expense solution without a separate provider, this removes a step.
4. Account opening is fast, fully online, and lighter on documentation than most providers
In our hands-on testing, the application process took about 20 minutes to complete and was approved the next day for a standard Hong Kong private limited company. Airwallex’s standard document requirements for a straightforward HK company are: Certificate of Incorporation, Business Registration Certificate, government-issued ID for directors and shareholders, and proof of business activity. This is lighter than what several traditional bank alternatives require, and the process does not require a branch visit at any stage.
5. Accounting integrations with Xero, QuickBooks, and HubSpot reduce reconciliation overhead
Airwallex connects to Xero, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Zapier, and Amazon. The accounting integrations sync transactions automatically, which reduces monthly reconciliation time for businesses using these tools.
Cons
1. A 0.3% inbound fee that isn't on the public pricing page
Airwallex charges 0.3% on every transfer received from an account not owned by the same account holder. We found it inside the account dashboard — on one incoming payment to my own account, I received HKD 4,130 and was charged HKD 12.39, exactly 0.3%.

What does this actually cost at real volumes? At 0.3%, a HKD 50,000 transfer costs HKD 150, a HKD 200,000 transfer costs HKD 600, and a HKD 500,000 transfer costs HKD 1,500. Based on 12 payments per year, that's HKD 1,800, HKD 7,200, and HKD 18,000 annually, respectively — before any FX or transfer costs, and with no cap I could find. This does not apply if the sender shares ownership of the Airwallex account, and it's still not listed on Airwallex's public pricing page as of July 2026.
Note: This fee does not apply if the sender shares ownership of the Airwallex account. For example, if you transfer between your Airwallex account and your own bank account. It applies to transfers from clients, suppliers, or any third-party bank account.
2. Card FX conversion can hit even when you hold the currency
A charge billed and settled in a currency you hold is genuinely fee-free — confirmed on a USD software purchase in my own account, where exactly the billed amount left the balance. But holding the right currency isn't a guarantee. Paying a Thailand-billed subscription in THB, a currency I hold, the charge still routed through my USD balance and converted at a markup of roughly 1.2–1.9% against the mid-market rate that day — a merchant-side routing choice, not something the cardholder controls. The only way to catch it is comparing your balance before and after.

3. An account manager that isn't supposed to exist yet
Businesses on the Explore (free) and Grow (HKD 499/month) plans are meant to get support through FAQ articles and email only — a named account manager is officially reserved for the Accelerate plan, from HKD 2,499/month. In my own account, on the free Explore plan, Airwallex assigned one anyway in 2026: informal, not confirmed as standard policy, and untested for how responsive it actually is if something breaks. This tiered-support gap likely helps explain Airwallex's Trustpilot rating of 3.1/5 from 2,504 reviews (updated July 2026, down from 3.3/5), with reviews split between users who find support adequate and those frustrated by slow response times, unresolved issues, and account suspensions.

4. SWIFT transfers cost about what a traditional bank charges
Outbound SWIFT transfers cost HKD 120–200 per payment (SHA and OUR options) across all plans, including the free tier — a range that sits about where a traditional Hong Kong bank lands, which undercuts the "modern alternative to banks" pitch. At 20 SWIFT payments per month, the transfer fees alone total HKD 2,400–4,000 before FX costs.
🔎What are SHA and OUR?
Also worth knowing: multi-user access, payment approval workflows, and advanced management tools require the Grow plan (HKD 499/month) or Accelerate (from HKD 2,499/month) — the free Explore plan covers a single user only. And while the first five employee cards are included on every plan, each additional cardholder costs HKD 40/month, which adds up for larger teams.
Airwallex Fees in Hong Kong
Airwallex Hong Kong uses a three-tier pricing structure: Explore (free), Grow (HKD 499/month), and Accelerate (from HKD 2,499/month).
| Fee type | Explore | Grow | Accelerate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | Free | HKD 499 | From HKD 2,499 |
| Local transfers | Free | Free | Free |
| International (SWIFT) | HKD 120–200 | HKD 120–200 | HKD 120–200 |
| FX conversion | From 0.2% | From 0.2% | From 0.2% |
| Inbound receiving fee | 0.3%* | 0.3%* | 0.3%* |
| Employee cards | 5 free, then HKD 40/user/month | 5 free, then HKD 40/user/month | 5 free, then HKD 40/user/month |
Fees based on publicly available pricing and in-account verification as of June 2026. Check Airwallex’s Plans and Pricing page for current rates, as fees are subject to change. *0.3% fee is not listed on the public pricing page and may apply only to specific business account types, so it's a good idea to confirm with Airwallex whether it applies to your account.
Where costs build up: The 0.3% inbound receiving fee (if applicable) and SWIFT transfer costs are the two areas most likely to affect total cost for active accounts.
Airwallex Features
Global Accounts and multi-currency wallet: The Global Account is a multi-currency wallet with local bank details in major markets. You can open up to 10 Global Accounts, each functioning like a local bank account in a specific country. In our testing, Global Accounts for USD, EUR, and GBP were created within a minute each. The receiving details look like a local bank account to the sender, which reduces transfer friction for international clients. Some outbound payments use local rails (such as the ACH network for the US, or the SEPA system for Europe) where available, or SWIFT where not. Batch payments support up to 1,000 recipients per run.
Below is what Airwallex’s Global Accounts dashboard looks like.

Visa corporate debit cards: Airwallex issues Visa debit cards (physical and virtual) linked directly to your account balance. Company cards cover operational expenses; employee cards are for individual spend. Cards operate in the currency of your account balance, with automatic FX conversion at Airwallex’s rate if you spend in a different currency. The first 5 employee cards are included on all plans; each additional cardholder costs HKD 40/month.

Accounting and ecommerce integrations: Airwallex connects to Xero, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Zapier, and Amazon. Accounting integrations sync transactions automatically. Ecommerce integrations allow direct payment collection from your website. Some advanced integrations may require higher-tier plans.

Invest your idle cash: Airwallex Yield lets businesses invest surplus balances in money market funds directly from their Airwallex account. Businesses can sign up within the platform. Advertised returns are up to 2.14% (HKD), 3.63% (USD), 1.98% (EUR), and 3.73% (GBP), although rates vary and returns are not guaranteed. Yield is a discretionary portfolio management service rather than a savings or deposit product.
Account Opening
Opening an Airwallex business account is fully online. Both locally incorporated and foreign-owned companies can apply. Bearer-share entities are not accepted.
Standard documents for a Hong Kong private limited company:
- Certificate of Incorporation and Business Registration Certificate
- Personal details for all directors, shareholders, and the Ultimate Beneficial Owner (UBO: any individual or entity holding more than 25% of the company)
- Government-issued ID for each director and shareholder
- Photo ID and selfie for identity verification
- Proof of business activity (invoices, website, or equivalent)
Depending on your company structure, Airwallex may also request Articles of Association, an ownership structure chart, proof of business address, or a corporate resolution.
Account opening was relatively quick in our testing, with the application taking about 20 minutes to complete and approval arriving the following day for a Hong Kong private limited company. Airwallex advertises a 3-day window, which is consistent with our experience for straightforward structures. More complex structures or higher-risk jurisdictions may take longer.

User Reviews
| Platform | Rating | What users praise | What users flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 3.1/5 (2,500+ reviews) | Easy setup, good international coverage, fast transfers | Payments blocked, slow support on escalations, pricing changes without adequate notice |
| G2 | 4.2/5 (50+ reviews) | Ease of use, integrations, efficient transactions | Account approval issues, mixed support quality |
Review data sourced from Trustpilot and G2 as of July 2026.
Across the larger Trustpilot sample, common positives include broad international coverage and an easy-to-use platform. Common complaints focus on payment holds, slow issue resolution, and pricing changes that some users felt were not clearly communicated. The 3.1/5 rating sits below some other fintech competitors in the same space.
G2’s smaller sample of 50 business users skews more positive, particularly on ease of use and integrations, but the support and approval complaints appear in both datasets. For businesses whose operations depend on uninterrupted cash flow, the Trustpilot pattern is worth factoring in alongside the pricing.
Airwallex vs Statrys
Cost to send and receive
| Dimension | Airwallex (Explore) | Statrys |
|---|---|---|
| Inbound receiving fee | 0.3% on non-owner transfers, uncapped* | Free (domestic); HKD 60 flat (international) |
| Outbound SWIFT transfer | HKD 120–200 per transfer, every plan | HKD 85 per transfer |
| FX rate and fees | From 0.2% above interbank | Rate based on mid-market rate, FX fees from 0.1% |
| Monthly fee | Free | Free (HKD 88/month inactivity fee if fewer than 5 outbound payments a month) |
*As this fee does not appear on the public pricing page and may be specific to certain business account types, you may want to verify with Airwallex whether it applies to your account.
Currencies and account opening
| Dimension | Airwallex (Explore) | Statrys |
|---|---|---|
| Supported currencies | 20+ currencies, broader global reach | 11 currencies, weighted to the Asia-Pacific corridors most HK-registered companies actually pay through |
| Account opening | Tested at ~20 minutes; approval 1–3 days | 96% of accounts open and receive payments within 3 business days |
| European accounts | No equivalent for Hong Kong-registered companies | Local account details in 5 European markets since July 2026 (UK, Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark, Liechtenstein), free GBP/EUR sending |
Support and trust
| Dimension | Airwallex (Explore) | Statrys |
|---|---|---|
| Support | FAQ and email only on Explore/Grow; a named account manager is officially Accelerate-only, from HKD 2,499/month — though in my own account, on the free Explore plan, Airwallex informally assigned one in 2026, untested for responsiveness and not standard policy on paper | Dedicated account manager on every plan, reachable by phone, WhatsApp, or WeChat — no upgrade required |
| Regulatory status | Money Service Operator (Customs & Excise Dept.) — not a bank, not a stored value facility | Licensed Money Service Operator (Hong Kong) — not a bank |
| Trustpilot rating | 3.1/5 (2,504 reviews) | 4.8/5 (435 reviews) |
The support gap isn't incidental — it's the same gap behind Airwallex's Trustpilot complaints above. Businesses on Explore or Grow only get a named contact after they've already escalated through email, which lines up with the "slow response" pattern reviewers flag. Statrys assigns that contact from day one, on every plan, no escalation required. Since July 2026, Statrys clients with a Hong Kong account can also open local account details in five European markets — the UK, Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark, and Liechtenstein — with free GBP and EUR sending, directly from the same dashboard; Airwallex has no equivalent for Hong Kong-registered companies.
Choose Airwallex if: you mostly pay out — suppliers, contractors, payroll — and want a competitive FX rate on a free plan with Visa cards per employee from day one.
Choose Statrys if: you collect regular payments from clients and the 0.3% Airwallex fee would cost more than a flat HKD 60 per international transfer; you send frequent SWIFT payments and want a flat HKD 85 instead of Airwallex's HKD 120–200 range; you want a named account manager instead of a support queue; or you want a lower FX fee from 0.1% on the mid-market rate. Open a Statrys Hong Kong business account — 96% of applications open and start receiving payments within three business days, about the same timeline as the Airwallex test above, minus the support gap.

Other Considerations
Airwallex's Global Account structure genuinely holds up: adding a new market means adding a currency, not switching providers, and I've held 11 without issue. FX is shown upfront before you confirm, and the advertised "from 0.2%" has matched what I've actually gotten on the pairs I use. Local rails now reach further than they used to — Octopus and PayMe acceptance (PayMe onboarding was paused when I checked) is a real win for Hong Kong businesses collecting locally. None of that is undercut by the findings above; it's a genuinely capable account for the things it's good at.
What to Ask Before You Choose a Multi-Currency Account
- Is there a fee on money you receive, not just money you send? Many providers advertise "free" based only on outbound costs.
- Is that fee capped, and is it on the public pricing page? If you can't find the answer without opening an account, that's itself the answer.
- Does holding a currency actually guarantee no conversion fee? Ask specifically about merchant-side routing, not just your own transfers.
- Is a named account manager standard, or reserved for a paid tier? Ask what support looks like on the free plan, not the one you're being sold.
The Bottom Line
Airwallex earns its 7/10. Global Account structure, and card coverage make it a competitive product at the free plan price point. The account does what the pricing page says it does.
The limitation is real and specific: the potential of a 0.3% inbound receiving fee, which we found in our dashboard and is not displayed on Airwallex’s public pricing page, changes the total cost calculation for any business that collects payments from clients. At HKD 200,000 received per month from clients, that is HKD 7,200 per year in receiving fees alone. At that volume, providers that charge a flat fee per international inbound transfer are materially cheaper.
If you primarily pay out — suppliers, contractors, international payroll — Airwallex is a strong choice in Hong Kong. If you primarily collect — client invoices, ecommerce receipts, service fees — run the numbers on the inbound fee before deciding.

FAQs
Is Airwallex a bank in Hong Kong?
No. Airwallex is not a bank. It holds a Money Service Operator and stored value facility (SVF) licence from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), which allows it to provide payment and multi-currency wallet services. As a non-bank institution, Airwallex accounts are not covered by the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board scheme, which protects deposits at licensed banks up to HKD 800,000.
Does Airwallex charge a fee for receiving transfers?
Airwallex may charge 0.3% on transfers received from accounts that are not owned by the same account holder. As this fee is not listed on the public pricing page and may apply only to certain business account types, it's worth confirming with Airwallex whether it applies to your account.
What is the best Airwallex alternative in Hong Kong?
The best alternative depends on your payment pattern. Statrys is the closest like-for-like alternative for Hong Kong businesses, with multi-currency accounts, competitive FX rates starting from 0.1%, no inbound receiving fee for local transfers, and a dedicated account manager to help you when issues arise.
How long does it take to open an Airwallex account in Hong Kong?
Airwallex advertises a 3-day approval window. In our test of a standard Hong Kong private limited company, the application form took about 20 minutes and approval came the next day. More complex company structures or higher-risk jurisdictions may take longer.
What currencies does Airwallex support in Hong Kong?
Airwallex supports 20+ currencies in Hong Kong, including HKD, USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, AUD, SGD, CNY, and others. Local receiving accounts with local bank details are available in major markets such as the US, UK, Europe, and Australia. However, you can open only up to 10 local receiving accounts per one Airwallex account.
